CATF Report: AI and High Performance Computing Applications in Fusion

by Jerry Louis-Jeune

As the world faces mounting climate challenges, the need for clean, reliable power sources has never been more urgent. The rapid growth of data centers and the increasing energy demands of artificial intelligence (AI) systems have highlighted the necessity of abundant, zero-carbon electricity. Fusion energy, long seen as a futuristic goal, is now emerging as a viable solution to meet these demands.

The fusion energy sector has experienced unprecedented growth in recent years. With over $8 billion in private investment—more than $7 billion raised since 2020—the industry has expanded from just 10 companies in 2017 to over 40 today. This surge in funding and innovation reflects the increasing momentum behind fusion as a transformative energy source.

A recent report from the Clean Air Task Force (CATF) explores the pivotal role of artificial intelligence (AI) and high-performance computing (HPC) in advancing fusion energy development. The report outlines several key areas where AI and HPC are driving progress:

  • Materials selection: Accelerating the discovery of materials that can withstand the extreme conditions inside fusion reactors.
  • High-temperature superconductors: Enhancing the performance of magnets critical for containing fusion plasma.
  • Inertial fusion energy: Optimizing designs for laser-based fusion systems.
  • Tritium breeding: Addressing the need for self-sustaining fuel cycles.
  • Advanced diagnostics: Improving the ability to monitor and control fusion reactions in real time.

The report features 16 case studies showcasing how AI and HPC are being applied to these challenges, demonstrating the transformative potential of these tools in fusion research and development.

Moreover, the interplay between AI and fusion is not one-sided: as fusion becomes a practical energy source, it could power the AI systems that helped bring it to fruition. This symbiotic relationship could redefine how we approach both technology and energy.

With fusion energy poised to provide clean, firm power for a carbon-constrained world, the integration of AI and HPC is proving to be a critical accelerant. As we navigate the path to a sustainable energy future, these advancements serve as a reminder of the innovative solutions that emerge when diverse fields intersect.
